The Department of Performing Arts and Film offers courses of study in three fields of performing arts: Film, Dance and Theatre.
Theatre
The Subject Area of Theatre offers Bachelorโs and Masterโs programmes in Acting, Theatre Education, Directing, Dramaturgy and Stage Design.
Film
In the Subject Area of Film, the Bachelor of Arts in Film offers a basic course of artistic study that prepares students for assistant positions in the film industry. As of 2018, it is also possible to study โProduction Designโ. The Master of Arts in Film further develops studentsโ talents in the creative profiles they choose, such as Screenwriting, Directing Fiction, Documentary Filmmaking, Creative Producing, Camera and Film Editing.
Dance
There are three different programmes for Dance. The first is a course of study at the Zurich Dance Academy that leads to a Federal Certificate of Proficiency (EFZ) with a Specialization in Classical Academic Dance. The second is the Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Dance and the third is a Master of Arts in Choreography or Teaching and Coaching Dance Professionals.
The three Masterโs programmes in Film, Dance and Theatre are led as cluster programmes. Transdisciplinary study opportunities are offered and welcomed.
Postgraduate programmes are currently being offered as a pilot projects (โartistic development projectโ fellowship programme) or as doctoral studies in artistic research.
Research
The Institute for the Performing Arts and Film conducts a variety of research activities (projects, symposia and publications) that ensure that courses in the department offer research-based teaching. The Instituteโs research focuses are โFilmโ and โPerformative Practiceโ.
Venues
The department has two performance venues: the Kino Toni cinema and the Theatre of the Arts. They serve as both presentation venues and teaching rooms for the Degree Programmes. They are also used as experimentation platforms for students from the Department of Performing Arts and Film and other departments at ZHdK.
