Institutional art collections are often housed in meeting rooms, corridors, or workplace environments where their presence serves a purpose beyond mere display. These spaces shape how artworks are seen—framing them within administrative, social, or everyday contexts. But what happens when these works are recontextualized in an exhibition setting?
ON DISPLAY presents works on loan from the Kunstsammlung Kanton Zürich (Art Collection of the Canton of Zurich), spanning the 20th century with a focus on contemporary art. Curated collectively by students of the Minor in Exhibiting and Making Public and the BA Fine Arts Isatou Jallow, Felizia Kampa, Youbin Kim, Marco Mauerhofer, Lelah Neary, Jenna Smith, Alena Stadler, Vera Steinmann, and Wingyin Yeung—under the shared mentorship of Fabienne Dubs (collection curator), Gabrielle Schaad, and Johanna Vieli, the exhibition rethinks the dynamics of institutional display.
Institutional collections are shaped by policies of acquisition, display, and circulation that define their visibility and accessibility. By relocating these works into a public exhibition at ZHdK, ON DISPLAY explores new curatorial freedoms and critically examines the tactics, mechanisms, and conditions that shape how artworks are framed, perceived, and experienced.
