- Eva Vรถgtli: Why did you choose this programme?
-
After a few years of living in France, I wanted to go somewhere far away from where I was, and when I eventually hesitated to go back to Seoul, where I am from, I did a trip to Switzerland. I felt warmness in Zรผrich and it encouraged me to continue to live in Europe. I already knew about the masters of Fine Arts because one of the alumni is my friend. The anxiety, doubt, and curiosity makes me scared, but is also there to let me be who I am and made me come here.
- What are your current projects?
-
I explore painting bringing the relationship between figs and fig wasps as a metaphor, dealing with how the social class is contained in precarious residences such as a maidโs room in Paris and a semi- basement in Seoul, and is repeated in the architectural structure. Iโm also working on finding a relationship and accessibility to water through tattoos inspired by gills, scales, and spines. This project will be a film that is between documentary and fiction. Lastly, I'm filming my dad as he embarks on his journey to find his place as an architect, while I endeavor to complete the project he couldn't finish, in my own way.
- Has the programme kept what it promised?
-
It is the best decision I made last year. I met so many beautiful people who I want to keep in touch with for a lifetime. I especially like my classmates. I have much time to focus on my projects yet possible to have opportunities to share emotions, notions, ideas ... Iโm happy to be here.
- Do we need art? And if we do, Why?
-
I once believed art could change the world and I often felt hypocritical. I still ponder if it can or should, but I think everyone is floating on their own wave and art can set us in motion, so we need art.
- What transition has shaped you the most so far?
-
I donโt live in the past anymore. All the moments I wanted to hold to so badly and I always wished to go back to are still in me, but I live in present now. This change is related to one of the subjects of my work, โindividuals transforming to other botanical forms in the urban environmentโ.
- What is your favorite place in Zurich?
-
There is a tree that makes me feel as if I knew it since my childhood in Zรผrichhorn, so I like going there from time to time. And I love my friends Nic and TKโs house. It gives me this feeling that something will stay where it was and is. I can also be the most comfortable and all the time we spent there can make me smile.
