Biography
Susanne Schumacher is an art scientist and actively working in the field of digital transformation at universities.
She holds the position as chair of the Digital Council of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). The Digital Council has been strategically advising the university board on digitalization since the beginning of 2018. Additionally, the Digital Council initiates and implements programmes and projects to achieve the digital transformation at the ZHdK.
Moreover, Susanne Schumacher is involved in various committees and networks to support digital transformation at universities. In particular, she has been actively engaged since the end of 2017 in the development and establishment of the Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH) also as a member of its management board for this purpose. At the DIZH, the cantonal universities UZH, ZHAW, ZHdK and PHZH are cooperating for 10 years to focus on digitalization in the areas of research, innovation and education.
Susanne Schumacher also headed the Digital Knowledge Programme at the ZHdK from the beginning of 2018 until the end of 2021. The program implemented the ZHdK's transformation towards Open Science. To this end, it promoted an open knowledge culture and made content from teaching and research linkable, accessible online and digitally sustainable.
Susanne Schumacher studied art studies and media theory in Germany and earned a doctorate on data in art history at the ETH Zurich. In 2024, she graduated from the embaX programme run jointly by ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen.

Susanne Schumacher ist Kunstwissenschaftlerin und aktiv tätig im Bereich der digitalen Transformationen an Hochschulen.
Sie ist Vorsitzende des Digitalrats der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdK. Der Digitalrat berät seit Anfang 2018 die Hochschulleitung strategisch zur Digitalisierung. Zugleich initiiert und realisiert der Digitalrat Programme und Projekte zur Umsetzung des digitalen Wandels an der Hochschule.
Daneben engagiert sich Susanne Schumacher in verschiedenen Gremien und Netzwerken, um digitale Transformation an Hochschulen zu unterstützen. Sie bringt sich insbesondere seit Ende 2017 aktiv beim Aufbau und der Entwicklung der Digitalisierungsinitiative der Zürcher Hochschulen DIZH ein und sitzt hierfür gegenwärtig dem Management Board der DIZH vor. Bei der DIZH kooperieren die kantonalen Hochschulen UZH, ZHAW, ZHdK und PHZH für 10 Jahre in den Bereichen Forschung, Innovation und Bildung.
Susanne Schumacher leitete darüber hinaus von Anfang 2018 bis Ende 2021 an der ZHdK das Programm Digitales Wissen. Das Programm setzte die Transformation der ZHdK hin zu Open Science um. Es förderte zu diesem Zweck eine offene Wissenskultur und machte Inhalte aus Lehre und Forschung vernetzbar, online und digital nachhaltig zugänglich.
Susanne Schumacher studierte Kunstwissenschaft und Medientheorie in Deutschland und promovierte an der ETH Zürich zu Daten in der Kunstgeschichte. 2024 Abschluss des EMBA X, das gemeinsam von der ETH und der HSG angeboten wird.
