BEAUTY SALON is a cinematic examination of a variety of hair and beauty salons in multicultural districts of Zurich. Based on the cosmetic treatments available to men and women, ideals of beauty are considered, gender roles are analysed and cultural codes are deciphered. The social impact of cosmetic treatments is quite varied, and people’s outer appearance follows a clear principle of classification, helps to build identities and promotes conformity and belonging among individuals.
