An intercultural project based on sound identities in the Middle East and Central Europe.
The project โListening Across the Bordersโ seeks to explore how identity manifests itself through sound and listening in the regions of the Middle East and Central Europe. In the midst of the current conflict situation in Israel and Palestine, characterised by political and social tensions, the initiative aims to generate new channels of expression and communication between artists from Israel, the Arab world and Europe. The creation of safe spaces for collaboration will allow for reflection on identities and their manifestation in the field of sound and listening, transcending the barriers imposed by different narratives and providing fertile ground for dialogue and mutual understanding.
The project convenes artists and teachers with Israeli, Arab and European backgrounds to address aspects of sound and listening from an artistic and identity perspective. By focusing on sonic phenomena, participants can explore shared narratives and common experiences, providing a platform for creative expression that goes beyond political constraints. The awareness-raising of active listening and the co-creation of sound works are presented as powerful means to build cultural bridges, foster empathy and contribute to a deeper understanding between affected communities.
The objectives of the project include exploring sound identities through musical improvisation and collective creation, fostering cultural exchange to enrich mutual understanding, and promoting narrative flexibility by identifying dimensions of listening that can challenge pre-existing identity narratives.
The project will be developed in six phases, from listening awareness to evaluation and documentation. Face-to-face and virtual workshops, creative sessions, remote production of joint works and performance events will be part of this process, culminating in the collection of feedback, thorough documentation, evaluation, workshops and lectures of the cultural and artistic impact of the project.
