Dossier commission amount as discussed: 5'000.-CHF
Methodology and objectives:
An exchange with the Lifestyle degree programme of the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) in Rotterdam was undertaken as part of the New Ground module. The New Ground module is based in the discipline of cartography, and students deal primarily with site-specific content. In the first part of the module, students acquire a theoretical understanding of cartography/localization in a spatial context. A map is then created in the second part of the module using these foundational theoretical principles. By shifting to Rotterdam, the students were presented with an additional challenge: the mapping of an unknown location. The exchange with teaching staff and students of WdKA made it possible for them to get to grips with their new surroundings more quickly. In addition, this cooperation contributes to the internationalization of the Style and Design specialization, facilitating a technical exchange that extends beyond borders.
Summary:
The partial completion of the New Ground Style and Design specialization module at the Willem de Kooning Academy established a collaborative partner for future international projects. It was possible to discuss common course content and core subjects and apply them on site. This collaboration has established the basis for a longer-term exchange, and extends the international network for the Style and Design course.
By analysing trends and lifestyles in a foreign city (Rotterdam), it was possible to engage with cartography as a paradigm for researching and discovering the living environment in a way that was practical, professional and grounded in reality.
