N’Ko is an African script that was invented in 1949 as a writing system for the Manding languages. Manding languages are spoken by over 20 million people in various countries of Western Africa. Despite its importance in terms of promoting African languages and cultures, N’Ko is still relatively unknown, even in the countries in which it is spoken.
The aim of the “Learning N’Ko” project is to create a free education package in order to teach children at schools in Ivory Coast and Guinea the N’Ko script. The package will include games, posters, books and creative design materials (coloured pencils, paints, etc.).
“Learning N’Ko” is of crucial importance for promoting the use of the N’Ko script, for enhancing cultural diversity and for preserving African languages and cultures. The aim of the project is to ensure that future generations will be familiar with their cultural heritage and will be equipped with the tools needed to preserve it.
The education package offers a collection of educational resources which teachers can use to teach N’Ko in a manner that is both playful and structured. The goal is for teachers to be able to carry out the activities without any prior knowledge. The kit will be accessible to both Dyula and non-Dyula-speaking children and will be adapted to different age groups.
