Biografie
The Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung described the pianist See Siang Wong as a “subtle painter of sound” who has made a name for himself with his musical interpretations. He has been awarded numerous prizes and quickly advanced to become an internationally sought soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist.
He made his debut at the age of 12 with the Dutch Radio Orchestra. He has since performed in renowned venues in over 30 countries throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and Australia, including Tonhalle Zurich, KKL Lucerne, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, St Martin-in-the-Fields London, Salle Olivier Messiaen Paris, Bertramka Prague, Marble Hall Budapest, and St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall.
He also makes regular guest appearances at leading international music festivals. Highlights of his artistic career include collaborations with renowned conductors and orchestras such as Pierre Boulez, Sir Roger Norrington, Ralf Weikert, Leo Hussain, Howard Griffiths, Philipp von Steinaecker and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Musikkollegium Winterthur.
His extensive discography for major and independent labels has received praise and awards from music critics and includes piano works and concertos by Bach’s sons, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Haydn, Messiaen, Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann. Swiss Radio music reviewers selected his interpretation of Schumann’s Piano Concerto as their favourite in a blind comparison of recordings by Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Dinu Lipatti, and Andreas Staier. The solo recordings of Chopin, Mozart, Schumann and his recording of Schumann’s Piano Concerto and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 6 (Piano Arrangement of the Violin Concerto) were honored by Swiss Radio with the Classical Highlight Award. In 2012 his Schubert CD (RCA Red Seal) won the prestigious Golden Label Award given by Belgian music critics. In 2016 Cinema Classics (Sony Classical) soared to the top of the UK official charts and both Piano Movie Lounge albums were best-sellers in Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland. In 2022 and 2023, both of his most recent albums Minore & UnHEARD, featuring Mozart’s minor concertos and Beethoven's concerto No. 6, received the esteemed Pizzicato Supersonic Award.
His great interest in contemporary music has led to collaborations with leading composers such as Emmanuel Nunes, Marco Stroppa, James Dillon, and Rudolf Kelterborn. He initiated the project Swiss Piano, which promotes the creation of piano compositions; many famous Swiss contemporary composers have already contributed to this continuing project, which currently consists of 30 new piano pieces.
See Siang Wong has taught at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2002. From 2006–2008 he was a guest professor at the University of Arts Lucerne. He regularly holds masterclasses and has been a juror at various music competitions such as the Géza Anda Competition (SRF radio juror), the Marguerite Meister Competition and the Edwin Fischer Competition.
See Siang Wong has studied with Marjès Benoist in the Netherlands as well with Homero Francesch and Bruno Canino in Switzerland. He belongs to the exclusive circle of Steinway & Sons Artists and lives in Switzerland.
Besides his musical career See Siang Wong is also known as a TV cook and food blogger (www.seesiangs.com). He playfully combines his passions for cooking and music. In 2018 he became the winner of the popular TV cooking show Männerküche (Men’s Cuisine), the Swiss equivalent of MasterChef. He frequently gives interviews and concerts on the similarities between cooking and music. In addition he has created recipes for SRF Swiss National Television & Radio, Migros Magazine, Marmite Gourmet Magazine and Klassik Radio Germany among others.
