Launch Night
Wednesday, 8 September 2021: 18.00 - 22.00
At Toni Campus, Konzertsaal 3, 7.K12
Registration
To kick off the forum properly, we will plunge into the vast field of the creative economies and explore what we can learn from the fruitful fusion of creativity and business. Andy Pratt is one of the world's most renowned researchers in the field. His keynote will review the debate around the creative economies, in whose course the field has rapidly risen to prominence in both research and the public mind. Andy will also outline the next ten years.
But does research stand up to the test of practice? Following the keynote, actors from the fields of culture, technology and research will provide insights into the different perspectives that converge in the creative economies and discuss a wide range of questions: How is the fashion industry dealing with megatrends such as sustainability or digitalisation? How can Switzerland pioneer creative cities and replace them with the concept of smart cities? And what is the role of the public sector?
Following this panel discussion, the ZCCE will present a web platform created jointly with Accenture Switzerland that demonstrates the power of mapping. Beyond statistical analyses, the website aims to become a central exchange platform for the creative economies in the coming years.
After the formal events, visitors will be able to enjoy a special nurturing concept by Lauren Wildbolz, which will be accompanied by an entertainment programme designed to present everything ZHdK has to offer.

We have entered the digital century: Interconnected and globalised, human activities have changed in unprecedented fashion – the pandemic has only accelerated this process. Networked worldwide through our online lifestyle, yet confined to our homes, we have entered a specific territory in the global village: We are “geolocalised.”
The workshop will illustrate the concept of geolocalisation in the context of advancing digitalisation and will address various fundamental questions:
- Does the Internet create more certainties or more uncertainties? Are certain uncertainties not essential to creativity? If so, how can we make them more predictable?
- Does the Internet facilitate or limit innovation?
- Since the late 1990s, the Internet has constantly renewed itself and changed several times. Are we heading towards an infinite world of innovation? Or can we stabilise the Internet and ourselves in a more predictable future?
- How to maintain the “start-up” spirit in a world tending towards ever faster institutionalisation?
- Internet and sustainability: what are the “weak signals” on this subject?
This workshop takes into account the major changes affecting us beyond the analog/digital dichotomy. The complexity of these changes stems from the blending of ecological, globalisation, post-migration and identity issues. Smart cities need to become smart, sustainable and creative cities. Art must become more sustainable, but also more inclusive in terms of gender or diversity. Hierarchies are blurring. We need new criteria, new influencers and smart curation.
This panel is organised in association with the Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH).

In uncertain times, adaptability, dynamism and unconventional approaches are in demand – qualities that the creative economies carry in their DNA. So it's no wonder that, against all odds, they have shown resilience in the last few months of the pandemic and produced outstanding projects. We discuss with specialists on the topic of innovation what really matters in the future; in the Creative Economies and beyond. In this session we also get inspiration from the success stories from selected thinkers and doers in the form of mini TEDtalks and exchange ideas in deep & speed rounds.

Mapping the unknown or the in-between. The focus provides insights into experiences and state of the art data analysis and mappings of the creative economies. With international researchers, we discuss recent mapping projects and future challenges. How can the creative economies be made more visible and its value quantified? What new approaches are out there? What are the user needs?

SESSION 1: Future Cultural Heritage in Zurich’s Industrial District
Thursday, 9 September 2021: 13.00 - 16.30
At Toni Campus, Konzertsaal 3, 7.K12
Registration
Workshop
Eva Pauline Bossow | Managing director ZCCE
Ann Mbuti | Communications ZCCE
Antonio Scarponi | Architect, designer, founder of Conceptual Devices

Christoph Birkholz | co-founder and co-managing director of Impact Hub Zürich
Georgios «Jorgo» Kontoleon | Co-founder and co-managing director of Impact Hub Zurich
No matter where you go, it also depends on where you come from: It's not just your own view of the world that is shaped by your background; cultural heritage influences all areas of living together. That's why future-oriented projects are now looking beyond their own horizons and into the heritage of the things surrounding them.
This is also the case with the Limmathaus, a building in the heart of Zurich, that has existed as a place of encounter and cultural exchange since its founding almost 100 years ago. Back then, the focus was clearly on the labor force, which not only worked but above all lived in this industrial district. For a long time, the Limmathaus was used as an event location, restaurant and hotel, but after its renovation in 2024, a new chapter begins. The Impact Hub is moving in and, with its focus on collaboration, creating a place for a contemporary workforce - and opening up the debate on what it might look like.
The afternoon workshop looks at the creative potential of cultural origins. How does the industrial heritage shape the environment of an area? What different roles of cultural heritage are there in existing cases around Europe? How can we draw inspiration from them? And how can we adapt that to a case like the Limmathaus? Various inputs will activate creative and entrepreneurial minds to envision the cultural heritage as a propeller of spatial (and social) transformation. The participants will receive the basic knowledge to tackle the challenges of mixed and temporary uses and an understanding of “place making” strategies to activate the cultural heritage of built environments.
SESSION 2: A dynamic Platform for the Creative Economies
Thursday, 9 September 2021: 13.00 - 16.30
At Toni Campus, Kammermusiksaal, 5.K13
Registration
The afternoon session of the Creative Economies Forum brings together various participants like developers, contributors and users of the dynamic digital platform which will be launched during the event. They will discuss how the needs for such a website can be met:
- What is available on the platform and how?
- How should it further develop? What would be topics?
- Who can contribute and how?
- What are the needs of the different users (academics, students, creatives)?
16.45 - 17.15: Check-out and outlook
17.15 - 20.00: Gentle closing
After an intense day in the different working groups, we come together again at its end. In the check-out, we consolidate the variety of topics and impressions under the umbrella of creative economies and dare to look ahead – because the next forum is sure to come. Afterwards, the insights of the day can be discussed and freshly made connections can be deepened in a relaxed atmosphere with music and entertainment on hand.
