Dossier commission amount as discussed: 4000 CHF
Methodology and objectives:
The fact-finding mission for the research project took place in December 2015.
A workshop was organized in collaboration with the Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) in Cairo, as well as a programme of local discussions with artists and image producers. The theme of colour in film was employed as a point of reference for the workshop to establish the context for the Manual for intercultural exchange. The objective was to develop a manual that would facilitate an effective working environment.
Summary:
Film as procedural practice; technology as a hinge; the problems with censorship: The aim is to discuss potential approaches in the context of examinations that are grounded in practice. How is artistic activity possible within a politically repressive environment? Autonomy may be achieved by operating in a procedural medial manner. Working with artistic means can be viewed as creating an autonomous zone and "place for difference", as defined by Bhabha. It is necessary to continuously discuss the relationship between supporting this autonomy and reflecting on one’s own involvement in the circumstances of production. In the micro-political sphere, it is necessary to consider long-term implications, options for further discussions and possibilities for continued activity. The unilateral nature of these travel exchanges presents a massive problem. European educational institutions need to play a role in this regard, as well as meet the needs of artistic production.
