Art Production and Handling

In the “Art Production and Handling” minor, students learn how to produce, conserve and handle artworks from an artistic perspective, along with the theory underlying such work. Moreover, they explore a field of work in an art institution within the scope of a personal project.

Programme

Course content.
Are you interested in art production, art conservation and art handling? Would you like to explore the definition of artwork in the field of tension of idea and material? The “Art Production and Handling” minor qualifies you to work in the fields of art production and art handling. Students examine the definitions of artwork in art production and art conservation, along with the practical aspects of dealing with art as well: Special characteristics of materials, audiovisual technologies, production and post-production as well as conservation of artworks are also part of the course content. Moreover, students acquire practical knowledge of the structures, processes and legal framework conditions in museums, galleries and trade fairs, which will stand them in good stead in the working world. They consolidate the skills that they have acquired in an individual or collaborative project.

Skills acquired in the course.
Students learn ...
–  about art historical and art theoretical discourses related to the definition of artwork and their impact on art production and art conservation;
–  how to deal with practical problems related to the production and handling of artworks from the artist’s perspective, and also to develop innovative solutions;
–  how working processes function in different art institutions and the ins and outs of their respective framework conditions;
–  to consolidate their knowledge of art production and art handling in one of their own projects in the art field.

Admissions requirements.
You know the principles of independent artistic practice, have basic knowledge of art history and art theory, and in-depth technical and social skills. Besides offering your artistic services, you would also like to work in a supportive capacity as an art handler for exhibitions and collections, or as an assistant for artists.

Language skills required.
You need the following languages to take this minor:
–  English: to be able to follow a discussion
–  English: to actively participate in a verbal exchange
–  English: to understand a text
–  English: to write a text

Time structure.
The modules of this minor take place on Friday afternoons between 1 und 6 p.m. throughout the academic year. In calendar weeks 2, 3 and 4, as well as in calendar weeks 8, 9 and 10, the minors are taught in block weeks from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The exact times depend on the minor chosen.
