Master of Arts in Composition and Theory
Composition, theory and sound engineering, with their key element of creative authorship, represent one of the three principal fields of music education at university level, encompassing performance, pedagogics and creation. The interrelationships that exist between the Master's degree programmes in these fields are of crucial importance for any modern university of music. They foster a competitive climate amongst the students and help to extend their skills and competence: Anyone who composes music for others will develop a better appreciation for performance; anyone who observes how people compose today will be able to judge better his or her own performance and the historical repertoire; anyone who learns how to evaluate his or her own abilities will be able to communicate content better. The precondition for this is a solid and broad-based musical education as offered by the Bachelor's degree programme at both universities.
The Master of Arts in Composition and Theory is offered in collaboration with the Bern University of the Arts. The different specializations and core subjects of both universities complement each other perfectly. Students also benefit from the fact that the Master's degree programme takes place within a setting in which โ apart from music โ theatre, dance, film, media, art and design are also offered. As a result, the joint Master's degree from the two Swiss universities of music provides creative students with a broad selection of topics, both as regards the interdisciplinary approach that has now become an inherent part of the programme, and the greater depth achieved in the study of one's own discipline.
