Study of contemporary music
The pool of lecturing staff at ZHdK, the cooperation with the institutions and musicians of Zurich, and the presence of guests from the globally networked music scene all make it possible to give expression to different traditions of current music-making, and to try them out in various contexts on a practical level.
The topics offered are aimed at the following:

Artists: In the ensemble for contemporary music at ZHdK, Arc-en-Ciel, works are practised in all permutations, in some cases in the ZHdK orchestra or in workshops. The inclusion of specialized conductors, artists and composers gives participants a feel for the pulse of today’s music.

Composers: Future composers studying different fields – both contemporary composition and electroacoustic composition, or composition for film, theatre and media – as well as sound engineers and theoreticians, all find a wide range of study options featuring current music in events of the Studio of Contemporary Music and in the related specializations of the BA in Music and MA in Composition and Theory.

Music educators: Working with contemporary music forms part of the training for budding musicians and educators. In the MA in Music Pedagogy, students develop an independent artistic personality and acquire the associated pedagogical and didactic knowledge and skills.

Cross-disciplinary students: Contemporary music deals with issues and questions that extend well beyond music itself, and that create connections with other forms of media expression – in the fine arts, film or the theatre. Appropriate course options can be developed from the transdisciplinary programme available.
